Geological Survey Museum

Introduction
The museum, under the administrative control of the Geological Survey Department of Malaysia, is acknowledged as having among the best and oldest mineral and fossil exhibits in the country, dating back some 600 million years.

Objective
Its primary function is to display the geological specimens of Malaysia and to introduce the public to the activities of the Geological Survey Department.

History
The foundation stone for the building was laid by His Highness Raja Idris Shah Ibni Al Marhum Sultan Iskandar Shah, CMG, and the Raja Muda of Perak in July 1955. It was inaugurated by His Excellency Sir Donald MacGillivray, KCMG, MBE, the then High Commissioner for the Federation of Malaya.

The museum was built as a wing forming part of the main building of the Geological Survey Department in 1957. In 1978, extensions were made to the museum to accommodate an additional floor space of 170 sq. metres, which is almost equivalent to its original area.

Collection
Among its exhibits are thematic maps such as geological, geochemical, hydrogeological, geophysical and mineral resource maps. An interesting geological time-scale illustrates the evolutionary trend of life from the beginning of the earth's formation. Also on display are some 600 mineral and 200 fossil exhibits and 200 gemstones and ornaments, mostly of Malaysian origin.

Models and colour photographs of geological structures and minerals and fossil specimens have been added in stages to improve the scope of the museum display.

The main attractions at present are the tin ores and gem stones.

Exhibition Galleries
The exhibitions are concentrated in a 343.3sq metre hall.

The system of display involves the arrangement of the minerals according totheir chemical and structural classifications, the rocks according to modes of origin, and fossils according to age.

Facilities
Workshops and laboratory facilities are available but are not located in the museum area. The laboratory facilities cover the cutting, grinding, polishing and analysis of geological specimens.

The library houses publications which cover all scientific subjects of geology

A photographic laboratory in the department has colour slides of geological specimens. A TV-video display is available to show the main activities of the department.

Educational Activities
Guided tours of the exhibition hall are conducted by museum staff. Research scholars are allowed to examine the large collection of rock, mineral and fossil specimens.

Students are given guided tours, and a collection of rock and mineral specimens are supplied free to schools.

Photographs may be taken and lectures are given on special request.
